Our Lakes

Tā tātou roto

Lakes380—Our Lakes’ Health: past, present, future was a five-year research programme that finished in 2023. It was the largest study of lakes in the history of Aotearoa. The team collected and analysed lake sediments and water samples and sediment cores from about 10% of lakes in Aotearoa New Zealand to learn more about their current and historical health and biodiversity.  You can explore and learn about these lakes below and view the initial results. Interviews and field visits were undertaken to learn more about the cultural and social histories of lakes. Over 70 national and international researchers took part in the programme with many outputs and resources produced.
