Congratulation to Lakes380 Masters Student Caitlin Wheeler from Massey University for receiving the New Zealand Freshwater Science Society Scholarship in Freshwater Research This scholarship is to support postgraduate research to gain a deeper understanding of any aspect of freshwater environments in Aotearoa.
Caitlins Masters research focuses on using sediment cores and a mixture of analysis including environmental DNA, pollen, ITRAX scanning, and metal analysis to explore whether cyanobacterial blooms have always been present in the dune lakes in the Manawatu region, and if not – what has caused them. Her recent results suggest the blooms only starting in about 1960 and this aligns with the use of fertilizer in the region.
Congratulations Caitlin -very proud of you and looking forward to seeing your Master thesis.
