Lakes worldwide are facing a major problem – human activity is causing their health to decline. But a new innovative eDNA based method create by Lakes380 researchers has the potential to revolutionise lake health monitoring.
Traditional monitoring methods are resource-intensive and require frequent sampling over multiple years, but this new method detects bacteria using eDNA to quickly assess the current water quality of a lake, allowing for more effective management. With this breakthrough technology, we can understand the causes of lake degradation and make a plan for restoration action.
The team has created a user-friendly app combining data from over 300 of our lakes with computer modelling to estimate the water quality of all lakes in Aotearoa. Check out the health of a lake near you on our lakes water quality app and let’s work together to protect our precious lakes!
