Lake Rotokare is a landslide dammed lake in Taranaki. It is located 12 km east of Eltham. The lake is nestled in a 230 hectare scenic reserve created in the early 1870s, in the Tangahoe catchment. It is the country’s largest wetland and lake habitat, inside a 8.2 km predator proof fence since 2008. Perch, a non-native fish species introduced to the lake, are found in high numbers and thought responsible for the heavy cyanobacteria blooms the lake experiences each summer.
