    Description

The Kaweka Lakes, also known as the Kuripapango Lakes of the Twin Lakes, are located in Kaweka Forest Park to the east of Mt Kuripapango. The lakes were formed many thousands of years ago as a result of the damming of 2 streams by debris from a massive slip off Mt Kuripapango. Only the slightly larger western Kaweka Lake 1 (8 hectares) has an outflow – a small underground stream, but the smaller eastern Kaweka Lake 1 (5 hectares) occasionally overflows into the bigger lake. Although small, the lakes are of considerable ecological and botanical significance, for the large number of plant species and vegetation types in the immediate surrounds (DOC).
