Rawiri Smith describes tohi – the traditional blessing of Māori newborn babies which formerly took place at the confluence of the Ruamāhanga River and Lake Wairarapa. The diversion scheme in the 1960s cut off the river from the lake, resulting in ecological impacts and social consequences.
